What does Palette FM do?

Ever seen one of those old-timey black and white pictures someone has taken the time to painstakingly colour? Palette FM uses AI to do the colourisation for you, meaning you can bust out your grandmother’s old photobook and get a technicolour glimpse into what life was like in a bygone era.

We Love:

  • Simple to use
  • Has an API
  • Best colourisation I’ve seen

We Hate:

  • Subscription pricing is a pain

Our Verdict on Palette FM

There’s not much to say here - If you want to colourise images, this has by-far the best results in the market. If you want to programmatically colourise images or video, Palette has you covered. And if you just want to send your grandparents onto the site instead, you’ll be glad to know the interface is straightforward, clear, and simple.

Compared Alternatives

  • LuminarAI - This photo editor has an AI-powered colourisation tool built in. It’s much harder to use and more specialised for designers, but if you really want to tweak the look then this might be a better option for you
  • Adobe Photoshop - The go-to tool for colourisation if you know what you’re doing, Adobe recently added generative AI fill capabilities to Photoshop which means you can begin to colourise images with a prompt or even add new things into the image. If you want do the latter, try Photoshop. If not, stick to Palette.

Features

  • Colorize black and white images
  • Customize color palettes and “moods” to create new images
  • Programmatically colorize images or videos via Palette’s API

Use-Cases

  • Colourise single photos or entire photo albums
  • Integrate the API to your own apps to enhance your colourisation options

Insider Tips

  • You can use the pen icon to edit the prompt used by the AI to generate your colourised images and achieve a more realistic look
  • Be super descriptive with each image you upload. I found I got the best results when I stopped naming colours like blue, orange etc, and instead used words which have a colour commonly associated with them - like sea, tree, leaves etc
  • If you know what you’re doing, the API offers much cheaper pricing than the Palette.fm website
